TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian government's policy to restrict community activities (PPKM) in Java-Bali has been far from effective. After ten days of its enforcement, community mobilization only decreased by 15-25 percent.

"We need a decrease in mobility by 30-40 percent in order to reduce the number of new cases," the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs' spokesman, Jodi Mahardi, told Tempo on Thursday, January 21.

Jodi said the high level of community mobilization pushes the Covid-19 transmission rate up. The increase in Covid-19 cases is accompanied by a high mortality rate due to the outbreak and an increasing level of hospital bed load factor.

According to the National Covid-19 Task Force, the total number of confirmed cases as of January 20 reached 929,948, of which 9,755 are new patients.

On January 15, Indonesia broke its record for daily cases with more than 12,000 new cases reported.
