TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Epidemiologist from Andalas University in Padang, West Sumatra, Defriman Djafri, said it takes 14 days for the body to build immunity or protection against coronavirus after Covid-19 vaccination.
“It is possible for people to get infected [by coronavirus infection] if they do not comply with health protocols even though they have been vaccinated,” said Defriman when contacted by Antara in Jakarta on Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021.
The Indonesian Epidemiologists Association (PAEI) Chairman of West Sumatra added that the performance of the vaccine in the body takes time so there must not be an assumption that people are instantly immune to the disease after being vaccinated.
Additionally, it is not yet known whether three million doses of the Sinovac vaccine that had arrived in Indonesia could work against the new coronavirus variant. The issue, he added, requires clarity and explanation from vaccinologists.
Defriman argued that wearing a face mask, washing hands with soap, and keeping distance are not sufficient to prevent virus transmission. It is also necessary to limit mobility and increase the routine of personal hygiene.
