74 Body Bags of Sriwijaya Air Crash Victims Evacuated

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) had evacuated a total of 74 bodies of victims of the Sriwijaya Air SJ182 plane that crashed into the sea within three days of searching. As of 22:05 local times last night, the team received 29 more body bags allegedly containing the body parts of the victims.

“We also find 16 small bags containing plane debris and 24 large bags of the pieces of the plane,” said Basarnas Chief Bagus Puruhito at JICT II Tanjung Priok, Jakarta, on Monday, Jan. 11.

The findings of the victim's body parts were delivered to the Police Disaster Victim Investigation (DVI), while the aircraft materials were sent to the National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT).

A significant addition to the search findings was submitted by Basarnas Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB) totaling 28 bags and one bag from navy vessel KRI Tjiptadi.

The joint search and rescue operation involved Basarnas, the Indonesian Military (TNI), National Police, Transportation Ministry, the Indonesian Maritime Security Board (Bakamla), KNKT, the weather agency BMKG, and other SAR teams.

The total number of personnel involved in the SAR operations of Sriwijaya Air crash was 3,818 with 54 vessels, 18 Rigid Inflatable Boat (RIB), 3 helicopters, and 33 ambulances.
