President Jokowi Ratifies Chemical Castration Law Against Sex Offenders

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Citing the Indonesian State Secretariat website on January 3, 2021, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo had signed the Government Regulation (PP) No.70/2020 on the procedure of chemical castration, electronic detection device installation, and public announcements against sex offenders.

According to the statement, the law was ratified on December 7 last year. Chemical castration applies to suspects of sexual crime already determined by the court and are legally binding while ‘perpetrators of acts of sexual obscenity’ are subjected to rehab and the use of tracking devices.

The State Secretariat JDIH elaborates that the sentences will be carried out by prosecutors.

The longest period of the chemical castration punishment lasts up to 2 years based on strict clinical analysis and judged by experts in the medical field. Sex offenders who have been given the castration punishment will also undergo psychiatric and medical rehabilitation.
