TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Sleman Regency has again extended the emergency response period of Mount Merapi due to the volcanic activity that keeps increasing. This is the second time the regency extending its emergency period.

After the emergency response period ended on November 30, Sleman extended it to December 31, 2020. Now, it has been extended again from January 1-31, 2021.

“Based on the report of Merapi activities from BPPTKG (the Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center) on December 18-24, 2020, the volcano status stood at Alert Level 3,” said regional disaster mitigation agency acting head of Sleman Regency, Joko Supriyanto on Saturday, January 2, 2021.

The active volcano has the potential to spew lava, volcanic material, and hot clouds. Joko said 240 people from Mount Merapi areas are still being relocated at Glagaharjo, Cangkringan, and they are in need of aids from the regional government to fulfill their basic needs.

“Sleman Regency is, therefore, recommended to do disaster mitigation caused by Merapi eruption that can happen at any time,” he said. Joko explained that the emergency response status makes a regional government able to allocate unexpected funds to mitigate disaster aftermaths.
