TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police announced on Wednesday, December 30, 2020, that the Sudirman and Thamrin Boulevard in Jakarta's inner-city area will be completely closed during the 2021 New Year's Eve. The decision was made to prevent people from gathering in masses, which violates the Covid-19 health protocol.

"We will subject people to rapid tests if people continue to form crowds," said the Metro Jaya police traffic director Grand Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo on December 30, 2020.

He said that closures will not only subject the two major aforementioned areas as popular locations that are annually used to celebrate the new year will also be closed, such as the Arjuna Wijaya Monument nearby Monas.

"Jakarta's borders will also be guarded and prevent vehicle convoys from entering the city," said the police commissioner. City tourist destinations will close early in the afternoon while hotels will be barred from holding any activities.
