Jakarta Police Plans Total Inner-city Closure in New Year's Eve

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police traffic director, Senior Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo, on Monday confirmed that the city will not be holding new year's eve celebrations as the Covid-19 infection rate is still on the rise.
“There will be no fireworks show and other [similar celebrations],” said Sambodo at the Metro Jaya headquarters on December 28.
Reports say that police are planning to impose a ‘car-free night’ policy during new year’s eve with plans suggesting the total closure for the city’s main streets such as Jendral Sudirman and MH Thamrin in Central Jakarta for vehicles and also pedestrians.
“However, we are continuing to conceptualize this in detail,” he said.
According to Sambodo, police will first disseminate the plan to businesses and hotel owners located across the two aforementioned streets. He noted that even if such closure will eventually be imposed, it will start from 8 in the evening until the morning of January 1, 2021.
