TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) called on the regional Covid-19 Mitigation Task Force to be aware of a spike in cases following increased people’s mobility during upcoming year-end holidays.

The agency’s Liaison Officer for the task force Didin Zainal Abidin outlined three critical points that potentially boost positive cases throughout December 2020 caused by mass crowds.

Didin explained the first point was the 2020 Regional Election Head (Pilkada). According to him, the democracy event presented a high risk of virus transmission such as during the voting.

“The second point is the collective leave days for the Christmas holidays, and the third point is the collective leave days for the new year holidays. In light of these critical points, I remind you that the enforcement of health protocol discipline is vital,” he remarked.

He pinned hopes that public discipline in applying the health protocols could suppress new cases. “The lessons on the surge in cases after the previous long holidays are necessary for us to pay attention to together so that it will not recur at those critical points,” Didin said.

Indonesia’s number of Covid-19 active cases reached 14.88 percent of the total 636,154 cases, Didin added. Besides, the recovery rate was recorded at 81.08 percent or 521,984 patients.

“The figure slightly decreases. Within the past month, the active cases rose by 2.15 percent, and the recovery rate dropped by 1.94 percent. These were data after the long holiday at the end of October and a large crowd in November 2020,” said Didin.
