TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Education and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim announced Friday that schools would be allowed to hold regular classroom schooling starting the 2020/2021 "even semester" [Semester Genap].

“Classroom schooling will be permitted but not required. The final decisions still lie on regional governments, school headmasters, and students’ parents through a school committee,” said Nadiem Makarim in Friday’s virtual press conference.

The government through the Joint Ministerial Decree of Four Ministers on the Guidelines of Learning for the 2020-2021 Academic Year in the COVID-19 Pandemic Period has given complete authority to regional governments, regional offices and Religious Affairs Ministry offices to hold face-to-face learning activities by taking into account the preparedness of schools and parental permissions.

He asserted that despite reopening classroom schooling, parents would hold the final say as to whether to let their children attend school or not. According to Nadiem Makarim, this policy will be effective starting January 2021 and will wait until schools prepare the essential health protocols required to run the regular classroom schooling.
