Nadiem Makarim Says Trials of New School Curriculum Will Start in 2021

TEMPO.CO, JakartaEducation and Culture Minister Nadiem Makarim said there were no policies, regulations, or plans to scrap history as a school subject from the new national curriculum that was being designed by the ministry.

According to Nadiem, the issue of eliminating history is brought up after an internal permutation of the curriculum simplification leaked to the public. While in fact, the ministry has many different variations that are being deliberated in the Focus Group Discussion (FGD) and public trials.

“Not all permutations will make it to the final. This is a proper assessment, in which all options are openly debated,” Nadiem added.

He stressed that he appreciated the history and the importance of history as a school subject for Indonesian children. The simplification of the curriculum, he added, would not be implemented in the near future.

“The simplified curriculum will not be carried out until 2022. In 2021, we will conduct a prototyping program at selected schools, and that will not be on a national scale,” said the founder of ride-hailing firm Gojek.

Thus, Nadiem Makarim asserted that he would not issue any national-scale policies regarding education in 2021. “Let alone removing history as a school subject,” he said.
