TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries announced that it had apprehended an illegal fishing boat flying the Malaysian flag over the Malaka Strait with four ship crews.

“The skipper and ship crews are Myanmar nationals,” said Tb Haeru Rahayu, the Ministry’s director-general of maritime resources and fisheries (PSDKP) on Thursday, November 19.

The arrest was made on November 17, at 11:28 Western Indonesia Times (WIB) by Indonesian authorities after the illegal fishing boat was taken to the PSDKP Dumai supervision post for further investigation.

According to Haeru, the crews of the fishing boat that have allegedly trespassed into Indonesian waters will face multiple charges under Law No.45/2009 on changes over Law No.31/2004 on fisheries.

On November 10, the Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry apprehended two Malaysian fishing boats over the Indonesian exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The ministry has captured 81 boats throughout this year.
