TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Flag-carrier Garuda Indonesia (GIAA) announced on Wednesday, November 18, 2020, that it will focus solely on traffic and recovery, setting aside its ambitious plan intending to import 150 unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV).

Garuda president director Irfan Setiaputra said that the UAV program is currently not a priority because the firm needs to focus on recovering losses caused by the global coronavirus pandemic. Garuda claims traffic has grown to record 200 daily flights.

"We are still planning and focusing on traffic and recovery," said Irfan.

At the same time, the Indonesian government has set a regulatory draft on UAV certifications that will act as a legal basis for its operations over Indonesian airspace.

Garuda Indonesia initially placed orders on 100 UAVs for cargo use and 50 aircrafts capable of VTOL or vertical take-off and landing from Chinese aircraft maker Beihang. This fleet was expected to be operated in Indonesia's eastern regions.
