TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - State-owned communications firm Telkom revealed that it had invested US$150 million (Rp2.1 trillion) into Indonesian multi-app firm Gojek to strengthen the services of its subsidiary, PT Telekomunikasi Selular or Telkomsel.

Telkom's disclosure report on Tuesday mentioned that the collaboration is to further support the company's attempt to provide better services and solutions for the public upon building a sustainable and inclusive digital ecosystem.

According to Jarvis Asset Management chief of marketing officer, Kartika Sutandi, by investing in Gojek, Telkomsel is opening the chance of broadening its services and developing new economies based on the telecommunication firm’s infrastructures and massive customer base.

Telkom’s investment into Gojek, Kartika said, will help Telkomsel develop digital apps and prevent them from developing an in-house app from scratch. "Telkomsel already has the infrastructures but it is time to shift to apps."

Kartika believes Telkom’s move will help realize the ambitions of SOEs Minister Erick Thohir who had pushed Telkom to obtain new sources of income outside of telecommunication.
