Police: Bicycle Robbers Mostly Unemployed and Underaged

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Metro Jaya Police Inspector General Nana Sudjana on Tuesday said that most of the ten “bicycle robbers” police arrested in the past month are underaged and unemployed. The rampant robberies targeting cyclists grew following the popularity of cycling amidst the pandemic.

According to police, the suspects who were arrested were mainly aged between 15-17 years old and were not linked to any existing syndicates or motorcycle gangs. “However, we will continue to investigate this even further,” said Nana at the Metro Jaya Police headquarters.

The teen robbers mostly did their actions in popular cycling areas in Jakarta such as Menteng, Central Jakarta, Penjaringan, Tanjung Priok, and Ciputat in South Tangerang.

The bicycle robbers will be charged with violation of Article 365 of the Criminal Code (KUHP) and face up to 9-years imprisonment.
