TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Foreign Affairs Minister Retno Marsudi announced that Indonesia was accepted to join the vaccines pillar of the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator or COVAX. The decision was taken during a multilateral meeting in Geneva with the CEO of Gavi's COVAX Facilities Seth Berkley, WHO Director-General Thedros Ghebreyesus, and UNICEF.

The purpose of the meeting was to continue the intensive consultation and communication with various organizations in mitigating Covid-19 and other strategic partnerships, to voice Indonesia’s support toward multilateralism, and to express Indonesia’s interest in being part of COVAX AMC.

“Indonesia has received a letter from GAVI on September 18, 2002, saying that Indonesia is eligible for receiving COVAX Official Development Assistance (ODA),” Retno said Friday, October 16.

Retno went on to say that she had met WHO DG Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus to officially deliver the Expression of Interest from Indonesia to join the COVAX Advanced Market Commitment (AMC).

The Minister said that Indonesia will continue to communicate and collaborate with the WHO regarding health issues. Indonesia also asserts the importance of solidarity in facing the Covid-19 pandemic.
