Bookstores in Senen Burned; Anies Baswedan Promises Capital Assistance

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan today, October 9, inspected several public facilities and buildings damaged due to the mass protest against the Omnibus Law on Job Creation on Thursday. One of the areas visited was Senen, Central Jakarta.
Anies monitored bookshops and ex-building of Grand Theater Senen that were burned down by the protesters. The fire also affected at least four stores located behind the building.
“Fire initially broke out in this theater last night and spread to nearby stores,” said Anies on Friday, October 9.
The fire has been put out now, and the officers were cooling down the location.
“These (books) are teaching and learning material. The burning of books has different meanings. We all incur extra losses when the books are burned,” said the former minister of education and culture.
Other than losing books, Anies said the fire caused losses for micro and small enterprises (MSEs) that run business in the location.
Anies Baswedan said he will invite all entrepreneurs affected by the Anti-Omnibus Law demonstration. “We will provide working capital assistance for people having books business and others so that they can rerun their businesses soon.”
