TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) deputy speaker Azis Syamsuddin confirmed 18 legislators contracted with COVID-19. He said the data was obtained from the House Secretariat's report.

“[The number] does not include expert staffers, staffers, pamdal or health security officers, contracted workers, and other employees,” said Azis on Wednesday, October 7.

However, he stopped short of detailing the total of legislators and staffers in the parliament complex who were tested positive for the coronavirus disease. He was also non-committal when asked about the names.

“The names are in the secretariat general,” said the Golkar politician. The House Secretary-General Indra Iskandar has not yet responded to Tempo’s question about this matter.

The House member from PDIP Sturman Panjaitan said there were two expert staffers from the House Legislation Body who died of COVID-19.

Sturman also said on Monday that 18 legislators were exposed to the virus thus the closing of the fourth session period would be expedited to October 5 from initially set on October 8, 2020.
