Mild Earthquake Strikes West Sumba in East Nusa Tenggara

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Monday announced that East Nusa Tenggara’s West Sumba had been struck by a magnitude 5.1 earthquake at 10:07 WIB. However, the agency assured that it had not triggered the tsunami early warning.

According to the report from the East Sumba BMKG head Arief Tyastama, the earthquake’s epicenter was 19 kilometers from the southern side of Waikabubak City in the West Sumba District from the depth of 65 kilometers.

Based on the earthquake’s epicenter and hypocenter, Tyastama said, the mild quake was caused by deformed oceanic plates on the ocean floor. No casualties or damages on infrastructure have been reported so far.
