TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The State-owned Enterprises (SOEs) Ministry on Monday signalled that energy firm Pertamina will be producing batteries for electric vehicles.

“Pertamina, in the future, will become a state-company that will produce batteries for the use of electric vehicles,” said SOEs ministry’s special staff Arya Sinulingga in an virtual discussion on Monday evening, September 28.

According to Arya, Pertamina is set to transform from a company known for producing energy to a battery producer as the firm has been requested to calculate how viable fossil energy will remain in the future.

As for negotiations with the electric vehicles market, he said Minister Erick Thohir is currently in negotiations with EV battery producers from South Korea and China and will approach other globally established brands such as Tesla.

“This is what we view as our future plans,” Arya Sinulingga said.
