TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian state-air carrier Garuda Indonesia has resumed flight services in the form of chartered flights to Chengdu, China. Flights to the country had officially opened in late August after shutting down since early in the year due to COVID-19.

“We offer the [charter] flights to Chengdu from Soekarno-Hatta once a week,” said Garuda Indonesia president director Irfan Setiaputra to Tempo on Wednesday, September 2.

He explains that the charter flights may serve special purposes such as repatriation and other specific functions. Garuda Indonesia’s subsidiary, Citilink Indonesia, had also resumed flights to China as it serves the Jakarta - Kunming route.

Despite offering chartered flights to China, the Garuda Indonesia president is yet able to confirm when the air carrier will offer regular flights as it has also not planned on expanding its charter flights to other Chinese cities.

“We will wait for an opening from the Chinese government,” said Irfan in referring to local regulators.
