TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A visitor of one of Indonesia’s largest caldera, Lake Toba, identified as Imran Butar-butar had been missing for seven days after he and five of his friends were swimming at the lake’s tourist spot Sukacita Beach on Sunday, August 23.

Imran is believed to have drowned at the lake after the group of friends swam 10-meters away from the beachline. According to the testimony from friends, Imran was unable to be seen as the other four had reached the middle of the lake.

After numerous attempts to search their missing friend, followed by a 7-day official search by the North Sumatra search and rescue (SAR) team up to the depths of 26-meters utilizing a submersible camera, the body of the missing swimmer has yet been located.

As of August 30, 2020, seven days after the day he went missing, the Medan search and rescue team spokesperson, Sariman, has finally decided to halt their rescue operation after conducting a thorough search from the last known location he was seen and eastwards into Lake Toba.

Local authorities explained that the difficulties they met remain to be Toba’s extremely difficult terrain at its lakebed.
