Ma'ruf Amin Addresses Halal Certification in COVID-19 Candidate Vaccine

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Vice President Ma'ruf Amin issued a written statement on Thursday, August 27, 2020, calling government institutions overseeing the halal regulations to make sure that the Covid-19 candidate vaccine from China's Sinovac Biotech would be halal-approved before it can be distributed publicly.
For this, Ma'ruf encouraged the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Assessment Institute for Foods, Drugs, and Cosmetics (LPPOM MUI), MUI fatwa commission, and the Religious Affairs Ministry’s Halal Certification Agency (BPJPH) to coordinate concerning the issue.
In his statement, Ma'ruf called for the aforementioned organizations to be proactive in obtaining the halal certification for the future possible vaccine.
Ma'ruf noted that halal certification is an essential element to prevent any form of rejection from members of the public. Ma'Ruf reiterated the previous case of rejection towards the Measles-Rubella (MR) vaccine. Currently, state-owned pharmaceutical firm Bio Farma is conducting its phase three clinical trials on Covid-19 candidate vaccine, which is expected to be complete in January of 2021.
