TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, on Tuesday said that the government is targeting to reduce waste up to 30 percent by 2025.

During a virtual launch of the Packaging Recovery Organization (PRO) today, August 25, Luhut Pandjaitan called for the cooperation of stakeholders such as businesses.

“2025 is just 5 years from now. We must work hard to achieve that goal,” said the minister.

Through the Reuse, Reduce, and Recycle movement, he also mentioned that the government is committed to reducing plastic waste of up to 70 percent by 2025. Luhut said strong commitments must be established to take unusual steps to reach the goal instead of “Business as usual.”

He also called for a systemic change in fighting plastic waste and the pollution that is caused by it.

The Indonesian government’s commitment that has been implemented in real-life circumstances include the establishment of the integrated waste disposal site (TPST) in Cilacap, Central Java. According to Luhut Pandjaitan, the government plans to build more disposal sites across 10 other cities.

The technology used includes processing waste into energy which will later be used as fuel to support the production of industries in its vicinity.
