TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced that Bengkulu City and regions in its vicinity were struck by a doublet measuring at magnitude 6.6 and 6.7 that happened at 05:23 and 05:29 Western Indonesia Time (WIB)

The BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami mitigation, Daryono, said the doublets’ epicenter was 169 kilometers southwest of Bengkulu and showed no signs of a tsunami.

The second recorded earthquake was recorded to come 78 kilometers Southwest of North Bengkulu and recorded a shallow hypocenter of 11-kilometers. Daryono states that the earthquake was sparked by the subduction of the Indo-Australia plate with the Eurasia plate.

BMKG reports that the sudden shock had affected Bengkulu, North Bengkulu, Mukomuko, Seluma, and Kepahiang and sparked massive panic among locals. The effects were also felt in South Bengkulu and no damages had been reported yet.
