TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has banned competition events annually held to celebrate Indonesia's 75th Independence Day as the city extended the transitional PSBB (large-scale social restriction) against COVID-19 for 14 days until August 27.
“Any social activities that can create crowds will be temporarily suspended,” said Anies in a written notice. “Especially the Car Free Day event.”
The transitional PSBB had been enforced since June 5. Anies continued to prolong the period given the rising COVID-19 positivity rate in the capital city.
He appealed to Jakartans to refrain from carrying out any events that potentially attract mass people during the transition period. However, residents are allowed to decorate their areas, houses, or offices to commemorate the independence day.
“The celebration can still be held. People willing to hold a ceremony are permitted but with limited participants. But contest events that are usually held are prohibited,” said the governor.
According to Anies Baswedan, a variety of typical August 17 competitions potentially cause crowds, while the national flag-hoisting ceremony event can still be managed. “The distance between people [participating in the ceremony] up to the procedure can be adjusted.”
