TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has again asserted the urgency in the acceleration of bureaucratic reform during his speech in the inauguration event of young civil servants from the Institute of Public Administration (IPDN).

“Now and in the future, it is not a big country that beats a small country, but a fast state outperforms the slow one. This is the problem of our country,” said the President on Wednesday, July 29.

According to him, regulations in the government bureaucracy were still perplexing. “There are too many rules that trap itself, too many procedures, too many procedural stages. Bureaucracy has been trapped by complicated regulations that it created,” he said.

The President hoped the newly-inaugurated officers would bring a different atmosphere and thoughts upon the government bureaucracy in the future.

“You [civil servants] must encourage the bureaucracy to take a smart shortcut, which is quick and efficient, and its results can be instantly enjoyed by the people. Moreover in this crisis, such a working method can no longer be negotiated,” he asserted.

The former Jakarta governor said the young civil servants could adopt quicker ways of working by simplifying complicated regulations and standard operating procedures.

“You must remember that you are the future of our government and people who will determine the bureaucratic reform in your respective institutions,” Jokowi said before the inaugurated civil servants.
