Bekasi Generates Trillions Upon Relaxing COVID-19 Restrictions

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Bekasi City reported a spike in locally generated income (PAD) after the city administration reopened a number of businesses such as discotheques, spa & massage parlors, and karaoke bars after over three months closure due to the COVID-19 restriction.
“The PAD of Bekasi City until last week generated over Rp1 trillion,” said Bekasi Mayor Rahmat Effendi on Tuesday, July 28.
Moreover, he explained that the increase in local income started since the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) had been partially lifted. This means that the entertainment businesses and tourism spots were the major contributors to the spike.
The generated amount far exceeds the region's five-month income until May 2020 of Rp685 billion. The PAD consists of regional taxes, regional retribution, regional wealth management, and other sectors in the PAD.
“Our goal is to generate up to Rp3 trillion,” said the Mayor, asserting that the reopening of multiple businesses in the entertainment sector continues to abide by stringent COVID-19 health protocols.
