TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Central Jakarta Mayor Bayu Meghantara asked operators or traders of sacrificial animals or qurban of Eid al-Adha using public facilities to maintain hygiene, especially amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We will try to coordinate further with them (traders of qurban). We ask their readiness to maintain the cleanliness and public facilities as before [they used to trade their animals],” said Bayu in Pasar Metro Atom Pasar Baru on Monday, July 27.

Bayu gave examples that qurban traders in Tanah Abang would occupy public facilities such as the roadside to open their business. However, the activity must be adapted to the residents’ condition to prevent public disturbance.

“We allow it (the activities) such as in Tanah Abang as it contains local wisdom or a belief that people should buy a sacrificial animal there,” he added, underlining that traders must not harm local’s activities and return the area’s function as in the beginning.

As of Friday, July 24, 1,600 sacrificial animals entered Central Jakarta and were accommodated in 37 shelters across eight districts. All animals had passed the screenings conducted by Central Jakarta Food, Marine, and Animal Husbandry Agency.

The number of shelters, however, significantly dropped from that of last year in Central Jakarta on seven days before the Eid al-Adha at 155 shelters, said the agency head Suharini Eliawati.
