Satpol PP Toughens Face Mask Rule as Jakarta Battles COVID-19

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) on Tuesday commenced an operation meant to discipline people’s use of face masks amidst the COVID-19 crisis as the administration is attempting to ‘flatten the curve.’
The operation that is dubbed “OK Prend” is meant to enforce the face mask requirement and fine those who are caught not wearing one in public spaces.
“The operation that has been implemented include inspection and supervision on residents and motorists who are caught not wearing masks,” said Satpol PP Jakarta Chief Arifin in a written statement today.
The fines, overseen by Governor’s Regulation No.51/2020, imposed on violators range from social punishments by cleaning public facilities while wearing a specially prepared vest up to administrative fines up to Rp250,000.
The operations are held across the city in major city streets up to B-roads. This comes after the capital city witnessed 200 average growth of COVID-19 daily cases with the highest at 441 cases on July 21.
