TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) announced Friday morning that a minor earthquake measuring 3.7 on the Richer magnitude scale was detected from Java’s southern sea at 11:08 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).

The agency reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was 89 kilometers southwest off of West Java’s Pangandaran beach.

BMKG head of earthquake mitigation Daryono in a written announcement said the epicenter specifically came from the coordinate 8.18 south latitude and 107.85 east longitude. The earthquake is categorized as shallow as its hypocenter was 18-kilometer-deep and would not trigger a tsunami.

The earthquake was felt across Java’s southern regions such as Pangandaran, Cipatujah, Cibalong, Tasikmalaya, Karangnunggal, and Singajaya. No reports on infrastructure damage have been reported.

Prior to the West Java earthquake, BMKG reported a 7.3-magnitude earthquake jolted Kokoda, Papua New Guinea, at 09:50 local time.
