TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - City-owned transportation firm PT MRT Jakarta announced on Wednesday that it has initiated the Phase 2A construction of the underground railway project that was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In Wednesday’s hearing with the Jakarta Legislative Council (DPRD), MRT Jakarta president director William Sabandar reported the construction from Thamrin - Monas that was initially planned to be held in March.

“The phase II construction has been commenced,” said the MRT Jakarta president on Wednesday’s DPRD hearing.

The project was also halted because of the limited mobility of Japanese workers who are unable to enter the capital city because of the COVID-19 restriction imposed on Jakarta. Due to this force major, MRT Jakarta has revised its deadline to March 30, 2025.

The halted Phase 2A construction effectively postpones four other projects that were initially supposed to be worked on in parallel to the 5.8-kilometer railway construction. Meanwhile, the length of the Phase 2B railway project is 6 kilometers.

MRT Jakarta also reported that it has received Rp22.5 trillion funding from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and is seeking additional Rp7.3 trillion funding that has been submitted to the DPRD Jakarta.
