TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Central Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Sholeh announced that despite the temporary closure of the car-free day event or CFD on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman-Thamrin starting June 28, people can still exercise with their bicycles in the area.

Earlier reported, the Jakarta provincial administration closed the event again following its first reopening last Sunday after the Covid-19 closure.

“We close the CFD on Sudirman-Thamrin, but we still open the pop-up bike lanes there,” said Sholeh on Wednesday, June 24.

The bicycle lanes that were separated by traffic cones would be installed from 6 a.m. until 10 a.m. The government allowed bikers to exercise using one lane along Sudirman-Thamrin.

The Transportation Agency would also deploy officers along the lanes in order to prevent density. “During the opening of the bike lanes, we prohibit street vendors and people from having other activities in the lanes.”

Besides, the Central Jakarta administration has tapped eight roads in eight sub-districts for the CFD event. “So we provide alternatives to replace the temporary closure of CFD on Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin.”

The Transportation Agency and other related institutions decided to close the weekly car-free day event on the city’s main roads after its first reopening on June 21 since it attracted a massive crowd so that people could not practice the physical distancing order.
