National Police Respond to Plethora of Human Rights Complaints

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian National Police (Polri) spokesperson Brig. Gen. Awi Setiyono said that the complaints filed to the Human Rights National Commission (Komnas HAM) against the police institution are a motivating factor to better the police institution.
“We appreciate the records kept by Komnas HAM against Polri,” said Awi. “Polri continues to try its best, most professional, and proportional. The appreciation from Komnas HAM has ‘whipped’ the Polri to improve its performance.”
Komnas HAM reported today that the national police were reported by a large number of people that range from administrative issues up to the use of excessive force allegations by police personnel.
“Public reports to police were sluggishly followed-up. The reports [against the police institution] mainly comprise this,” said Komnas HAM commissioner Amiruddin Al-Rahab at Tuesday’s press conference.
Out of 744 complaints, Komnas HAM categorized the reports against police into four types; legal processes that are not within correct procedures (46.8 percent); slowly processing cases (22.3 percent); acts of criminalization (8.9 percent); violence and torture (4 percent).
