TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Administrative District Court panel of judges has found President Jokowi and the Minister of Communication and Informatics guilty for violating the principles of government regarding the internet blackout in Papua and West Papua.

“By here the acts by the government committed by defendants number one and two are deemed in violation of the law,” said Judge Nelvy Christin in the virtual verdict trial on Wednesday, June 3.

Defendant number one in the case is the Communication and Informatics Minister while defendant number two is President Jokowi, which are ordered to pay court fees of Rp457,000.

During the verdict hearing, the panel of judges rejected the defendants’ exception and considered the internet bandwidth throttling on August 19-10, 2019; internet blockage from August 21 - September 4, 2019; and the internet blockage on September 4 - 11, 2019, are legal violations.

The internet blackout and bandwidth throttling imposed by the government in Papua in August last year was a followup to the mass-riots that broke in a number of Papua areas.
