TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI) stated it was preparing a study regarding a new normal policy of education.

The commission member Jasra Putra opined that reopening schools amid the Covid-19 outbreak must be through comprehensive review and studies of experts. “Especially epidemiologists,” said Jasra via a short message on Tuesday, June 2.

Besides, the Education and Culture Ministry must develop applicable health protocols for schools and regions that have different capacities, either the readiness of teachers, parents, or children, as well as infrastructures to implement it.

The commission hoped orders to reopen schools should be prioritized in Covid-19 green zones, and that must be carried out first on a limited trial period with shorter school hours.

“For example, reducing school hours from regularly 7-8 hours,” he added. The government and schools must also prepare Covid-19 protocols such as social and physical distancing, handwashing stations, and teachers’ monitoring on the policy.

Schools must as well install media or posters related to the implementation of the health protocols. “Schools reopening must be based on studies,” Jasra remarked.
