TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - National Aeronautics and Space Agency (LAPAN) researcher Rhorom Priyatikanto announced that Eid al-Fitr or Lebaran was predicted to fall on May 24, as the new moon or hilal could be sighted with the naked eye on May 23, right before sunset or Maghrib time.
According to Rhorom, the moon has not been in conjunction with the sun and is still under the horizon on May 22 late afternoon. The conjunction will occur at 00:39 a.m. on May 23.
“By default, Istikmal or completing Ramadan to be 30 days will be carried out. So first Shawwal will fall on May 24,” the astronomy and astrophysics researcher at the LAPAN’s Space Center told Antara in Jakarta, Friday, May 22.
Rhorom reiterated that Ramadan 29 or May 22 would likely not show hilal, yet it would be high enough to be sighted on May 23. “Alhamdulillah, this year’s Shawwal does not pose a critical period that is full of potential differences,” he said.
The Ministry of Religious Affairs planned to hold isbat or a confirmation meeting to decide the first day of Shawwal 1441 Hijri or Eid al-Fitr today afternoon, May 22. Minister Fachrul Razi was scheduled to lead the session.
