TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Transportation announced on Thursday, May 14, 2020, that there has been a 16 percent increase in rail freight logistics deliveries due to the increasing market demand for general goods and staple foods from e-commerce transactions.

"On the contrary, the number of containers had dropped by 15 percent during the pandemic due to the drop in export and import," said Cris Kuntadi, expert staff on logistics, multi-mode transports, and safety.

The data was obtained from activities in numerous train stations handling logistical transports such as Jakarta Gudang Station, Sungai Lagoa Station, and JICT Pasoso Station.

Cris assured that freight transports are not hampered by the large-scale social restriction (PSBB) ahead of the Ramadan Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

The Transportation Ministry is also pushing for rail freights to be the main alternative for goods deliveries replacing the role of land transport such as trucks, which are currently banned from traveling into a number of areas during the social restriction period.
