TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tokopedia CEO William Tanuwijaya said the company has taken a number of measures to mitigate the data theft of the e-commerce platform. One of those steps is internal investigations; done thoroughly to discover what caused the data leak.

"We have also appointed world-class independent institutions that specialize in cybersecurity to help investigate and identify what needs to be done in order to increase the protection of our users," William said in an email sent to Tokopedia users on Tuesday, May 12.

The company, he said, found out about the data theft on May 2, 2020. Immediately, he added, the company informed all users and began investigating.

"We continue to ensure that passwords are encrypted," he said.

The company also communicates and collaborates with the government; including the Ministry of Communication and Informatics as well as the National Cyber and Encryption Agency (BSSN).

It was reported that some 91 million Tokopedia users' data was leaked and being sold online. The data stolen includes real names and usernames, email addresses, birth dates, and phone numbers. Meanwhile, passwords are leaked in the form of hashes, which are difficult to encrypt.

To keep their personal information secure, William urges users to follow security measures, such as changing passwords regularly, not using the same password on many digital platforms, and keep OTPs secret.

William emphasized that Tokopedia's business is a business of trust. Therefore, he said his company always paid more attention to the security system.
