TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Metro Jaya Police department reported that it has backtracked 5,809 vehicles and ordered the drivers to turn around to their area of origins after the government imposed a ban on homecoming or “mudik ban” to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

“On Tuesday, April 28, there were 886 vehicles we ordered to turn around,” said the Jakarta metro police traffic Director Sr. Comm. Sambodo Purnomo Yogo in a written statement on Wednesday, April 29.

The police operation enforcing the mudik ban from April 24 up to April 28 saw a total of 5,809 vehicles attempting to leave COVID-19-affected areas and were ordered to return back.

The police operation is set up across numerous vital streets such as Bitung Toll Road, West Cikarang Toll, and main roads heading to West Java, Central Java, and East Java.

The vehicles that attempted to travel for homecoming (mudik) are dominated by four-wheeled vehicles with over 3,000, followed by public transports, and motorcyclists.
