TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police Force Headquarter (Mabes Polri) has banned all forms of gatherings in commemoration of May Day on May 1, 2020, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Surely, the Police Force did not need to issue a receipt of the notice. All of us must be able to carry out physical distancing in the current situation,” said the Indonesian Police Force Headquarter Chief of Public Information Bureau, Brigadier General Argo Yuwono, when confirmed on Wednesday, April 22, 2020.

The decision to ban all gatherings on May Day, Argo continued, is in line with the notice published by the Chief of Police numbered Mak/ 2/ III/ 2020 concerning compliance with government policies in handling the distribution of COVID-19. Moreover, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan has also officially enacted the Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy.

Jakarta Metropolitan Police Chief of Public Relations, Senior Commissioner Yusri Yunus, has also affirmed that the Jakarta Police will disband any crowd gatherings in violation of physical distancing rules.

"Yes, we will disband if there are still demonstrations, as we have already conveyed the ban on holding demonstrations, they should understand," Yusri said on April 21, 2020.
