TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian said on Tuesday about shortages of protective equipment for healthcare workers across several Indonesian regions to properly handle the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

He disclosed this situation during a teleconference meeting with Indonesian regents, mayors, regional secretaries, and the domestic business association such as Apindo, Kadin, and Hipmi.

According to him, two regions facing this shortage are NTT and South Sumatra, which are facing a lack of chlorine disinfectants and 250 regular face masks. “Meanwhile, Yogyakarta is in need of 3.2 million personal protective equipment (APD),” he said on Tuesday.

Tito Karnavian argues that there are many small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) that could be mobilized to produce much needed protective equipment and is the reason why he mobilized his ministry to map-out domestic factories and their production capacity.

In the meeting that was attended by state ministries, Tito Karnavian hoped that the cooperation between associations and government agencies can be united to handle the spread of coronavirus in Indonesia.
