TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Class IIB Kupang prison warden Yohanes Varianto has announced the early release of 21 inmates in an attempt to prevent overcrowding amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The decision was taken in as per an official instruction of Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly.

The inmates discharged are those who have served a minimum of two-thirds of their prison sentence as of December 31, 2020. “It also applies to underage inmates,” said Yohanes today.

One of the released inmates, Efradus Selan, told Tempo he was “glad to be free,” and promised he would not repeat his crime. Efradus has served 4 years from his 7-year prison sentence.

However, the released inmates will continue to be monitored and under private guidance from members of the penitentiary. The class IIB Kupang prison is eyeing to grant parole to 40 inmates up to April 7, 2020.
