TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Executive Director of Andalas University’s Studies of Constitution (Pusako), Feri Amsari, openly questioned the decision of the House of Representatives (DPR) legislators to discuss controversial bills (RUU) amidst the coronavirus (COVID-19).

The widely considered controversial RUU in question include; the bill on job creation, criminal code bill (RKUHP), and the bill on penitentiaries.

Feri was also bewildered by the DPR’s decision to shift focus from handling the coronavirus global pandemic to other affairs unrelated to the outbreak mitigation.

“Why are DPR legislators not focused on fighting the coronavirus but instead chooses to go against what civilians yearn,” said Feri to Tempo on Thursday, April 2.

He also argued that their decision to hold a meeting on the publically questionable bills shows that legislators are only focused on fighting for their own personal or political party agenda. Feri Amsari said the DPR has used the coronavirus pandemic by distorting their authority by attempting to pass troublesome Bills.

“Things like these are known by the term, ‘corruption of legislation’,” said the constitutional law expert.
