TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Authorities in India report that there are 281 foreign nationals from 16 countries attending the Tablighi Jamaat Islamic gathering earlier in March, with 72 of them being Indonesian nationals.

No further details have been reported regarding the identities of the Indonesian citizens, as well as their health status regarding coronavirus (COVID-19), or their current whereabouts.

According to a Whatsapp message from the Indonesian Ambassador to India in New Delhi, Arto Suryadipuro, their whereabouts are constantly monitored by the embassy.

“So far, the Indonesian embassy (KBRI) is in good cooperation with the Indian authorities,” said Arto.

The Times of India today reported that one Philippines national, aged 60, died after contracting the coronavirus. Roughly 300 out of the 8,000 Islamic event participants have either been treated or quarantined in New Delhi hospitals due to the disease.

According to local police records, some of the foreign nationals arrived to attend the Islamic gathering with tourist visas. This has driven the Indian government to blacklist those who committed it.
