Mount Merapi Eruption: Flight Traffic Runs Normal, Govt' Says

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Director-General of Air Transport of the Transportation Ministry Novie Riyanto, ensured that the eruption of Mount Merapi on Friday, March 27, 2020, will not affect flight operations in three airports located within the vicinity of the eruption. Novie said that the ministry is yet to issue a notice to airmen (NOTAM) in relation to the eruption.

The three airports are Adisutjipto International Airport, Yogyakarta International Airport (YIA), and Adisumarmo Solo International Airport.

"Referred to Ashtam VAWR 9415 released by AirNav Indonesia, operational activities are not disrupted by eruptions. We will continue monitoring the development," said Novie on Friday, March 27, 2020.

He added that the authority offices of each airport were coordinating with various stakeholders, including AirNav, regulators, and airliners in a bid to ensure flight traffics.

Nevertheless, Novie asked all related institutions and stakeholders to pay attention to the safety and security of air travel.

As reported earlier, the Yogyakarta Institute for Research and Development of Geological Disaster Technology (BPPTKG) announced the eruption of Mount Merapi at 10:56 AM local time. It was recorded on a seismogram with an amplitude of 75 millimeters and lasted about seven minutes, spewing around 5,000-meter-high ash columns from the summit.
