Deserted Streets Reflect Public Awareness of COVID-19 Prevention

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan said public awareness to prevent a further spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in the capital city has significantly improved.
He said this is evident in the condition of the nearly deserted city streets after the governor imposed social distancing protocol which called for offices to instruct employees to work from home.
”I should address that generally, Jakarta’s streets have become more vacant, which means people are starting to understand the importance of staying at home,” said Anies Baswedan in a virtual press conference from City Hall on Thursday, March 26.
He used the opportunity to reiterate that the government’s policies to suppress the spread of coronavirus will only go so far without public participation.
”I appreciate everyone who has consciously chosen to stay at home and [for those who can] work from home,” said the governor.
Anies also appreciated those who have no option other than to continue working in the field for adhering to the physical distancing protocol, especially in the use of public transports such as the Commuter Lines and Transjakarta. He said public transportation is most vulnerable to spreading the coronavirus.
