TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The online learning app Ruangguru announced that over one million students have registered to its services on Monday, March 16. This figure ranks Ruangguru at the top at Google Playstore, defeating WhatsApp and TikTok users that day.
This massive reception from users came as a surprise for the founder and director of Ruangguru Belva Devara, who said that he was touched by the enthusiasm shown by users. Ruangguru introduced its free online learning service in response to President Jokowi’s decision to temporarily dismiss schools to prevent the spread of coronavirus (Covid-19)
“It is an honor but also a massive responsibility in the shoulders of Ruangguru as millions of students rely on our study material during the coronavirus emergency period,” said the founder in a written statement on Tuesday, March 17.
The app’s free classes offer learning facilities through online live teaching from Monday to Friday where students can participate from 08:00 - 12:00 Western Indonesia Times (WIB). The subjects taught by Ruangguru teachers correspond to Indonesia’s national curriculum on all levels of education.
The free online classes by Ruangguru was lauded by Banyuwangi Regent Abdullah Azwar, who is also the Chairman of the Association of Regency Governments throughout Indonesia (APKASI). He also called for local governments to utilize free online learning services.
