TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The number of villagers from Tembagapura district, Mimika, Papua, who were evacuated due to terrors of the armed criminal group or KKB has increased. To date, 1,572 people have been evacuated to Timika, the capital of Mimika.

Papua Police Chief Insp. Gen. Paulus Waterpauw said security personnel would take the responsibility to provide a sense of safety for the community. “We will take strict action against KKB that often disturbs the peace among the society,” said Paulus on Monday, March 9.

Based on residents' information, the armed group terrorized villagers by intimidating them, occupying the village, and even pointing firearms towards them. The group caused fears so that residents demanded evacuation.

The evacuees hailed from, among others, Utikini, Longsoran, Kimberly, and Banti villages. The evacuation has been carried out since last Friday.

At present, evacuees who are already in Timika resided in their relatives' homes. “We ask for prayers as our members [police officers] will confront the group. As security forces, we will deal with the KKB to keep them from disturbing the community,” Paulus added.

The Papua Police Chief ensured that security forces would take stringent measures as the terror groups used firearms.
