Shortage of Hand Sanitizer; Anies Baswedan: Use Water and Soap

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - In response to the shortage of hand sanitizer in markets, Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan asserted that washing hands to tackle the new coronavirus or COVID-19 did not necessarily have to use it.
According to him, washing hands with clean, running water and soap is more effective than applying hand sanitizer.
“I appeal to all people, even though you buy large products of hand sanitizer, the more effective way to clean hands is with running water and soap,” said Anies at the City Hall, Jakarta, Monday, March 3.
He said that despite hand sanitizer was claimed to be able to kill germs in seconds, running water and soap provide more sense of cleanliness. “Because germs and viruses will be carried away by water. Even if they don’t die, they will not stay in hands,” Anies added.
Jakarta provincial administration has earlier established the COVID-19 response team as a center for preventing and handling of the new coronavirus.
The team was aimed at conducting surveillance and monitoring starting Monday, March 2 for the COVID-19 case. “If there is information needed to be known by the government, please report it. We are ready to respond and our team will be on guard 24 hours,” Anies Baswedan said.
