4.9M Earthquake Hits Sukabumi, Tremor Reaches Pangandaran

TEMPO.CO, Bandung - An earthquake measuring 4.9 magnitudes in the Richter scale jolted southern West Java on Friday morning, February 21 at 7:57 a.m. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said the quake centered in the sea did not trigger a tsunami.
The Tangerang II BMKG Head Hendra Nugroho reported that its epicenter was located at 8.17 degrees south latitude and 107.50 degrees east longitude. “Precisely in the sea, 112 kilometers southwest of Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java,” he said.
The quake was categorized as a shallow one given its depth of 11 kilometers. “It is caused by activities of the Indo-Australian plate's subduction with the Eurasian plate,” Hendra explained.
Based on public reports, the tremor was felt in Garut, Tasikmalaya, up to Pangandaran at the intensity level II-III of the MMI scale and in Sukabumi at the intensity level III.
BMKG’s modeling result showed that the quake did not trigger a tsunami.
